In China

In China.—Latest advices from China indicate that the government forces have met another defeat at the hands of the Kwangsi rebels, suffering heavy losses, some high government officials being among the slain. The governor of Hunan reports that the rebellion has reached a dangerous state in his province, and requests the government to mobilize troops in that and other provinces as a precaution against emergencies. The Chinese Government seems to be making efforts to increase the size of its army and to render it more effective. The Japanese ambassador at London, in a recent interview, is quoted as predicting that as soon as the forces of the Chinese rebels are organized, they will overthrow the present government. He believes it is a revolt against over-taxation and the dishonesty of officials.
