AN HONORABLE ACQUITTAL.
By J. W. Boynton
Last November, J. L. Hamren, near Wetaskiwin, Alberta, was arrested for violation of the Lord’s Day ordinance. In the justice’s court he was fined $2.00 and costs, amounting to $3.45 in all. The justice advised him to appeal to the higher court. By advice from C. W. Flaiz, president of the Union Conference, who was present, the appeal was entered and counsel engaged. Court sat in February. During the interval I sent tracts and papers on religious liberty to the leading men on the territory, writing them personal letters calling attention to the literature and to the Hamren case. The case was tried February 19, before Hon. Judge Scott, of Edmonton. He sustained the appeal, and quashed the conviction of Brother Hamren. We feel grateful to God that He has wrought for us in this thing. While we know this will be only a temporary relief, yet it will give us a little more time to work for this people in peace. J. W. Boynton.
