What Do These Things Mean? The Spirit of Combine

“What Do These Things Mean?”—This is a question often repeated. Men and women in many parts of the earth have been asking it during the past year of old earth’s tremors, quakes, and pains. Many are asking it of the great trusts. Thousands are asking it of the great combines and confederations from nations to schoolboys. The spirit of combine breathes in the very air. Many men are rushing from one extreme to the other—for the trust against the labor-union, for the union against the trust, in blind, mad partisanship. Thoughtful men stand doubting. The great questions of the ages are involved. Is it national, party, or class ambition or character? Is it the man or the nation as the unit? Is it the great mass or the individual? Is it primitive Americanism or is it the opposite? The SIGNS wishes to contribute to the solution of this problem; it wishes to help its present readers and thousands of others to a right understanding of the principles involved. It will soon present three articles on “What Do These Things Mean? The Spirit of Combine,” by Alonzo T. Jones, author of “The Two Republics,” “The Rights of the People,” etc. These articles set forth principles, facts, history. The reader can see the working out of principles in the future by the past. The three numbers containing these should be circulated everywhere, among all who desire to know the true solution of the mighty problem.
