BEYOND THE VAIL.

Winter by winter the sere leaves fall, Winter by winter we're aging all. Under the heather the leaves decay; Under the years we are hiding away. Youthtide and memory, sadness and song, Heartache and hope, as we hurry along.
Winter by winter the chill winds blow, Burying fancies under the snow. Winter by winter and year by year Bury the idols we cherished so dear. Over them scatter the leaves and the snow; Over their graves let the chill winds blow, Hover them, cover them, spirit sublime; Inter them tenderly, sexton of Time.
Winter by winter we journey along, Mingling burdens with snatches of song; Lifting the cloud from the children of gloom; Lighting some craft through the gulf of the tomb; Scattering joys where sorrows had been; Lifting the cross from those smitten of men.
Furrow by furrow they speed the plow Over the sod of the wrinkling brow— Furrow by furrow—and year by year Mount we and grow by our buffetings here; Over the idols we bury to-night God writes us “Victors” in letters of light.
