Enabling Acts

“Enabling Acts.”—To those who have never been delivered from the bondage of Egypt, from the galling yoke of sin, God’s law seems a yoke of bondage, and their heart rebels against its “Thou shalt not.” But to him who knows the liberty of Christ Jesus, the command of God becomes in Him an enabling act, expressing what he does in Christ, not what he ought to do. Thus Young’s translation of the Tenth Commandment, for instance, expresses the Christian thought: “Thou dost not desire the house of thy neighbor, thou dost not desire the wife of thy neighbor, or his manservant, or his handmaid, or his ox, or his ass, or anything which is thy neighbor’s.” Surely, this is a good law, isn’t it?
