AN OBJECT LESSON.

WHEN Moses was born he was confronted with a decree demanding his death. The king had issued a mandate that all the male children born to the Hebrews should be put to death at the birth. But Moses was saved through faith. The record says: “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.” Heb. 11:23. So the faith of the parents served for the child while it was not sufficiently mature to exercise faith for itself. And Moses was saved by means of an ark of bulrushes. It was a frail little thing, but its construction and use was an act of faith. By this work “was faith made perfect,” as when Abraham offered his son Isaac. James 2:21, 22.
Now this preservation of Moses is an illustration of the Gospel of Christ. We are all born into condemnation, under sentence of death. By one man came sin into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men. Rom. 5:12. And as Moses was preserved by the grace of God through faith, by means of an ark, so we are saved by grace, through faith (Eph. 2:8), and Jesus Christ is our ark of safety.
