The Spirit’s Conviction of Sin

It is by His Spirit that God strives with men. This striving is not the producing of a vague, uncertain impression, but is a conviction of sin. In this work the Spirit uses a sword, “which is the Word of God” (Eph. 6:17), a sword which is “quick [living] and powerful,” “piercing even to the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Heb. 4:12. From this we learn that conviction of sin is produced by the Spirit bringing to our remembrance, and keeping before our mind, the truth of God, which condemns our evil course.
