The Progress of the Christian World

The Progress of the Christian World is a topic in an Eastern religious journal, which notes that “the disfigurement of the Gospel by the dogma of endless torment has been extirpated from the consciences, if not from the creeds of men.” But many people who have ceased to openly advocate eternal torment still cling to the doctrine of inherent immortality. Thus they are shut up to one of two conclusions—eternal torment or universal salvation. But neither conclusion is based on the Scriptures of truth; for it is written that “the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” Eze. 18:4, 20. “The Lord knoweth the days of the upright; and their inheritance shall be forever. . . . But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs; they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.” Ps. 37:18–20.
