Success in Righteousness

Success in Righteousness.—The Daily News of London has demonstrated that a paper can live if it does not pander to every low, base enterprise which thrives upon the souls and bodies of men. Last March the paper passed into the hands of new owners. One of their first steps was to eliminate all betting and turf news. They felt that gambling had become a national evil, and that a vigorous campaign should be waged against it, but that this could not be done consistently as long as they advertised gambling schemes. There were plenty of prophets who predicted that this first experiment of its kind in daily journalism in London would fail, but history has demonstrated them false. The paper is a success. The News has demonstrated that it is not necessary to the existence of a paper that it should yield to the great vices of the times. Would that others might follow.
