Rats Spread the Plague

A French expert, M. Borel, quoted in the Literary Digest, says that the secret of the introduction and spread of the plague in carefully quarantined cities is the rats which accompany the ships, and which suffer from the disease several weeks before they transmit it to human beings. About the only protection in such a case would be to destroy the rats in every ship which sailed from any plague-infected port or region.
