GENTLENESS

The life that moveth everywhere, The light that shineth over all, The love that scatters every care, Are gentler than a feather’s fall. The earth removes its robe of snow, And decks itself in garb of green; In gentlest grace her blessings flow, Unostentatious and serene.
Elijah, who in Horeb sought The Lord for counsel to sustain; In wind, earthquake, and fire had thought To find Him; but he looked in vain. God was not in the cyclone’s path, Nor in the earthquake’s, fearsome tread, Nor in the fire’s consuming wrath, But in the “still, small” word He said.
The whispers of His love are sweet; The counsels of His wisdom calm; His work, His way, His word complete, Prove none so gentle as “I Am.” Omniscience is serenely kind, Omnipotence supremely mild; It takes Christ’s matchless grace to find The grandeur of a little child.
