People so nearly assimilated as are the inhabitants of the United States and Canada are only nominally separated by a line across an unbroken country, with nothing but an occasional mound to mark it. An interesting statement is made by Christian Work and Evangelist, as follows:— BANDS of Philippine robbers and murderers are again active in the provinces of Rizal and Bulucan, island of Luzon, and in the islands of Biliran and Leyte. A band of these marauders recently entered a town on the last named island, killed the presidente and his wife, and carried away the children. A band of fanatics is still operating in the island of Samar. The native constabulary have frequent encounters with these lawless bands, and many have recently been killed. A clash has occurred at Manila between the regular Catholics and the independent Catholic body known as the Catholic Church of the Philippines. The independent movement is a defection of the native clergy and their followers from the regular Catholic Church. The latter have forbidden the former to inter their dead in the Catholic cemetery. The independent Catholics are planning to appeal to the courts for their rights.
