American Emigration into Canada
A movement which is arresting public attention to a marked degree on both sides of the Great Lakes, yet which is imperfectly understood, is the emigration that is going on from the United States into Canada. From the northwest a constant stream of American emigration is flowing into the four provinces of Manitoba, Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. During the last year the records show the disposal by the government and by the railroad companies of somewhat over 4,000,000 acres. Manitoba alone has 23,000,000 acres of good land, only about one-seventh of which is now cultivated. The government authorities of Canada estimate that after all the land unsuited to agricultural purposes, such as swamps, arid regions, and mountains, is deducted, there still remain 75,000,000 acres of good land in the four provinces named. The yield is large, and the quality of the wheat the very first. The movement of the Americans also forecasts important political consequences. The population of the Northwest Territory is already one-fourth American.
