Volcanic Outbreaks in Guatemala

MUCH excitement prevails in western Guatemala because of the recent volcanic outbreaks and earthquakes there. The city of Quezatenanga has been covered with six inches of sand and volcanic dust from the volcano of Santa Maria. Rich coffee plantations on the coast side of the volcano have been buried under several feet of sand and ashes. This volcano is in the center of an extensive coffee producing area, and the reports indicate that these plantations are in ruins. Quezaltenango, which was recently overthrown by an earthquake in which several thousand persons perished, has its ruins now covered with volcanic dust from the same volcano. Southeastern Mexico also has been considerably affected by these disturbances.
