THE SUCCESSION OF CROPS.

KEEP up the succession of crops. If you want the fertility of your ground to be soon exhausted, just give it the same treatment, and plant in it the same crops, year after year. And if you want your mind to be sterile, just keep it fastened year after year to the same narrow set of ideas, jealously excluding everything that would bring you a fresh suggestion or a new thought. Read new books, welcome new thoughts, take up new studies; thus only will your mind retain its fresh vigor, thus only will it attain to a breadth and depth to which it has not yet attained.—S. S.
