We Hope It Is Not So

We hope it is not so. A cablegram from Rome, Italy, dated September 11, has the following:—
It is rumored here that the Vatican has received from President Roosevelt an intimation that he would be personally pleased to see Archbishop Ireland created a cardinal as a reward for the service the archbishop has rendered the church and the United States.
It is believed that the President’s note was called out by an inquiry from the Vatican as to whom he would favor for cardinal. We sincerely hope this is not so. It is no business of the President of the United States as to what priest or prelate is made cardinal. If such a preference on the part of the President has grown out of the Philippine imbroglio, it is another chapter in evidence of the long step in the papal maze which this government has been led to make.
