WILL BEAR WATCHING.

The Christian Advocate (Methodist Episcopal) remarks (July 3, 1902): “The country has borne with ill grace the negotiations between Governor Taft and the Vatican for the purchase of the church lands in the Philippines. It would be a great deal better had the negotiations taken place through intermediaries.” In a later issue, July 10, it says that the negotiations “will bear watching” by the government—“from the president to the last officer concerned in them.” “Who else should watch them?—The American people, including the Protestants in the islands. The friars, the entire Catholic hierarchy, and all politicians in their interest are watching them. Therefore all others should do so, to the intent that ‘our new possessions’ may not be either a wooden horse or a Pandora’s box.”
