The Naval Strategy Battle

The great naval strategy battle which was carried on for four days along the New England coast came to a close on August 24, the attacking squadron being captured by the defenders. The former under commander Pillsbury was required to make some harbor of the coast and remain there six hours without being confronted with a superior force. It was unable to accomplish its purpose. This is the first real lesson of the American fleet in playing at war. Hereafter the army is to be brought into requisition in connection with the fleet, and be put through such evolutions as it would be required to go through in case war had been declared by some foreign power. Preparing for war is the occupation of this generation, as the Scriptures have plainly stated that it would be.
