Disposition of the Friar Lands

The matter of the disposition of the friar lands in the Philippines is still unsettled. Judge Taft has presented to the Vatican another note containing final instructions from Secretary of War Root in regard to the matter. Some reports indicate that the Vatican would welcome a display of compulsion in the matter, so that it would not seem to be a party to the expulsion of the religious orders from their parishes. It would rather stand in the position of appearing to yield to force than of sanctioning and joining in the expulsion.
