Greater New York

GREATER NEW YORK is having a remarkable growth as measured by its congested street-car traffic. The total increase of passengers on the elevated railway alone during the nine months ending March 31 was at the average rate of 2,000,000 a month. For the quarter ending the same date compared with the corresponding quarter of the year previous, it averaged more than 2,500,000 a month. During the last quarter the increase was over 85,000 a day. The problem is a puzzling one. At this rate of increase, the new tunnel will afford no relief. The great high buildings, the immense business sky-scrapers, mean two or three large cities on the top of the old. Country dwellers ought to praise God for room.
