Philippine Friar Holdings

GOVERNOR TAFT of the Philippine Islands is now in Rome, and has had several conferences with the officials of the Vatican in reference to the disposition of the holdings of the friars in the islands. The instructions given him by the Secretary of War would indicate that the only solution of the troublesome problem is in the purchase of those holdings by the United States. Provision is to be made for the payment of rentals to the Catholic Church for the use of such buildings of the church as have been occupied by the military forces there in the various provinces. The Secretary of War has instructed the governor that his mission is purely a business one and in no way diplomatic.
