Religious Toleration.

Frank Leslie’s Popular Monthly for May tells of a type of religious “liberty” or “tolerance” that is very common. A Catholic crew of seal-fishers shipped a few “black sheep,” or sailors who were not Catholics. One of the Catholic seal-men, in speaking of it, said that it was the first he had ever been shipmates with Protestants. “But,” he observed, “they were first-rate fellows. I didn’t see any great difference in them from ourselves. They used to come down every night and say the rosary with us.” Then, as an afterthought, he remarked, “But it was mighty lucky for them that they did!” And in all probability these non-religious men felt that it was very prudent to go through the form.
