Capture of a Moro Stronghold

with Grant's concessions to the Moros.
On May 4, the command of General Davis in the island of Mindanao captured what is regarded as the stronghold of the Moro power. The despatch states that all the leading chiefs of the Moros in this fort were killed, and that the trenches around the forts were lined with Moro dead, while many more were lying in the tall grass. The total number of casualties could not be given. Eight of the Americans were killed and 34 wounded. Seven hundred Filipinos have surrendered in the island of Samar. This number includes General Guevarra, who was the leader in that island. Several hundred have surrendered in other parts of the Philippines, most of whom were armed simply with bolos and daggers. Thirty-five of the prisoners captured at the Moro fort were killed on the day following its capture while trying to escape.
