Tax Riots in Chili, China

HUNDREDS of persons are reported to have been slain in the province of Chili, China, in riots connected with the collection of indemnities. The people, having refused to pay the indemnities, banded themselves together in what they called the United Villagers' Society, and resisted the soldiers sent to assist the tax-gatherers. In the pitched battle which followed, the villagers were practically slaughtered, having no weapons with which to defend themselves against the modern arms of the soldiers.
