Catholic Pressure on England and Germany

The Roman Catholic “Monitor,” by its comparison of German and English princes, plainly shows where very much of the prejudice in this country against England is fostered, if it does not originate there. The Monitor intimates that Germany is favorable to Roman Catholicism, because she fears it. It says that “journeys to Canossa are costly and comfortless.” There is the standing threat that all Germany’s difficulties will be renewed, if she does not comply with the wishes of the church. And the same pressure is being brought to bear upon England.
