The Fastest Train in the World

The Scientific American tells us that the fastest train in the world runs from Paris to Calais, a distance of 184½ miles in three hours, including a stop of four minutes at Amiens, and slow running through the city of Calais to the pier. There are over ten express trains in France with a speed, including stops, of over fifty miles an hour, and more than half of these have an average of over twenty-five miles an hour. The Paris-Calais train has an average speed of over sixty-one miles an hour, seven miles an hour more than the Empire State Express, the fastest train in America. The best work is done, the same paper tells us, by the four-cylinder express engines of the compound type.
