INTEMPERANCE AMONG WOMEN.

THE Right Rev. Leighton Coleman, bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Delaware, in a sermon on “Intemperance,” declared that while there is a grateful decline in intemperance among men, there is an alarming increase of intoxication among brilliant and cultured women, those belonging to the so-called better classes. “A short time ago,” he continued, “I addressed a meeting of leading society women in New York City, when I made that statement. A leading newspaper made a careful investigation, and sent me a copy of the publication which contained the result. It proved that my statement was literally correct as far as New York City is concerned. I am sorry to say that it appertains to women and to mothers, particularly those who have the care and instruction of our future men and women. It is a sad outlook when mothers are not living in soberness and chastity.”
