Death of a Great Englishman.

Dr. Newman Hall, a noted Congregational minister, died in London, February 18, at the age of nearly eighty. His most famous pastorate was in the Rowland Hill Chapel. From the outbreak of the Civil War in this country he championed the cause of the North, and went all over England talking on the principles involved. After the war was over, he visited this country twice, lecturing largely to allay the feeling against England. He once offered prayer at the opening of Congress, praying for the President of the United States and Queen Victoria, and preached on a Sunday, at the invitation of Speaker Colfax, in the House of Representatives to members of both Houses. He was a strong advocate of total abstinence from intoxicating liquors. He was a good and great man, who evidently lived to his light.
