A Lesson for America in Ireland

LORD SALISBURY, in a recent speech at the unveiling of a statue of Queen Victoria, declared that the maintenance of a permanent junction between England and Ireland was the most important duty of the government. He asked the question whether Ireland loved England better than formerly, and replied that she did not. Commenting on this, the San Francisco Chronicle says, “That is the result of 400 years of British government of a fertile island on the colonial plan, which some Americans who would call themselves statesmen desire us to copy.” It is pertinent here to remark that this feeling of hostility has been kept alive by the priests of the Roman Church. America can not expect the priests of the same church to do any differently in the Philippines. There is a lesson in it for America if she would but heed. Neither is Ireland governed on the “colonial” plan.
