England Blocks European Intervention

REPLYING to a question in the House of Commons on January 20, in reference to the attitude of England toward the proposed intervention of European powers to prevent the United States going to war with Spain, the Under Secretary of Foreign Affairs admitted that Austria, as spokesman for other European powers, had proposed joint intervention. The under secretary stated that, had England signified her willingness to act with the “powers” in this matter, France, Russia, and Germany were to declare at once their connection with the plan. The under secretary intimated that England’s stand alone blocked the move.
