FAMINE-STRICKEN CHINA.

A DESPATCH to the Christian Herald from its special correspondent in Shensi, a province in the north of China, states that a terrible famine is raging in that section of the empire. Mr. Nichols says:—
The condition of the province is truly appalling. The whole country presents a picture of desolation. One year's deaths from famine, in Shensi alone, are over 2,500,000. There will be great need during the coming winter.
There are in the province many thousands of orphan children, who have lost their parents in the famine. And “unless something is done for these helpless sufferers, a large proportion of them will be sold into a slavery which, in the case of the girls at least, will be worse even than death itself.”
