The Papacy’s Healing Wound

THERE are many evidences that the “deadly wound” received by the papacy in 1798, when the pope was taken prisoner and died in exile, is fast healing. Some optimistic Protestants think that the power of Catholicism is still on the down grade, but they are deceived. Here is just one little straw, taken from a Catholic journal: “Two thousand schismatics who went out of the Catholic fold several years ago, during the trouble at Goa, Ceylon, a fortnight ago returned to the faith in a body. It is believed a number more will follow.” We might add to this another significant straw: “On the occasion of their visit to Niagara Falls, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York were entertained to lunch by the nuns of the Loretto Convent, Niagara.” This notwithstanding that terrible anti-Catholic oath of office the crown prince’s father so recently subscribed to when he ascended the throne of Great Britain.
