MAY IT SHINE BRIGHTLY.

The Illuminator is the name of a new journalistic craft that our friend Mr. M. H. McCarthy, proprietor and publisher of the Monterey County Enterprise, Castroville, has launched in Salinas. This is the aim of its editor, as set forth in its “Salutatory” of the first issue:—
While we shall endeavor by every honest means to place The Illuminator upon a self-sustaining basis, yet our great object will be to give; not to get. We shall endeavor to handle the current events of the day in a fair and impartial manner, and shall never knowingly do an injustice to any one, aiming at all times to avoid comments which savor of blind partisanship. . . . We shall advocate the fullest political and religious liberty for all men, and believe that these forms of liberty are only perfect while kept separate and distinct. We shall oppose all legislation the purposes of which are to unite these two powerful forces, knowing that there is a dangerously strong sentiment being promulgated among the masses leading toward this end. These subjects, almost universally neglected by the secular press, we shall endeavor to cast our rays of light upon from time to time, explaining to the best of our ability, the Theocracy, the perfect government, and how and why civil governments were instituted, and also the dangers which attend the efforts now being made to change our country from its rightful position as the “Cradle of Liberty” to one in which the conscience of man must be violated in order to escape persecution.
We shall make our columns as entertaining and instructive as possible, giving each week a complete summary of the news, together with other special matters of interest to people in all walks of life. Improvements will be added from time to time, in order that our friends shall have no occasion to feel ashamed of our efforts. We respectfully solicit the support of all who desire a clean, honest paper.
There is more besides equally commendable. Surely a paper with such high aims is worthy of support by the good people of Monterey County, and everywhere. May it indeed be an illuminator.
