Deaths from Contaminated Diphtheria Antitoxine

Twelve children have recently died in St. Louis from lock-jaw as the result of having diphtheria anti-toxine injected into their blood. The anti-toxine was made by the city chemist; and in view of the fact that a considerable number had been treated with this diphtheria anti-toxine, the city immediately began the distribution of a tetanus (lock-jaw) anti-toxine to counteract the effects of the other. The Health Department has announced that no more diphtheria anti-toxine will be made by that city.
