Congo Natives Slain in Rubber Raids

EDGAR CANISIUS, an American who recently returned from the Kongo Free State, confirms the terrible stories of cruelties and slaughter which the African natives have suffered at the hands of the Belgian troops. He reports that 900 natives were killed during one expedition lasting six weeks. Another expedition resulted in the death of 300 natives in three weeks. These expeditions are said to be simply raids in which the troops compel the natives to furnish a certain amount of rubber, and death is the penalty for their inability to do so.
