Another Testimony

Another Testimony.—Sunday-law people have often told us that California is the worst State in the Union because she has no Sunday-law. On the other hand, noted, fair-minded men from the East are surprised to find that the State is as well or better governed than the States in the East having the most stringent Sunday laws, such as Pennsylvania, for example. For instance, here is what Bishop Saterlee (Protestant Episcopal) of Washington, D. C., has to say of San Francisco, one of the worst offenders in the eyes of the advocates of religious legislation: “San Francisco itself is a great surprise to me, not ‘only regarding its size and its beauty, but also in its ‘charter and in its government. It certainly seems ‘to me one of the best governed, if not the best governed, city in the whole Union, and we in the East ‘can take an example from it.” Of course the truth is patent to every Christian that civil law can not make men better, nor can it aid religion in any way save to leave it alone.
