LATEST SCIENCE.

The Review of Reviews for September, 1901, gives an account in its current items of the Congress on Tuberculosis, recently held in London, in which were represented eminent experts on tuberculosis, among others Dr. Koch. In his paper Dr. Prof. Brouardel of Paris emphasized the drink habit as a prime cause of this disease. Dr. Dorenberg, another French specialist, in his paper, made an alarming report on the spread of tuberculosis in France, saying that one-third of all deaths there can be attributed to it.
He thinks that the frightful spread of this disease is due to the manner in which the French are taking to alcoholic drinks; wine has not saved them from strong drink. If alcohol, used by remote ancestors even, promotes tuberculosis, what sense in giving alcoholic stimulants as a remedy? We are told by other scientists that scrofula, erysipelas, leprosy, epilepsy, salt-rheum, and kindred diseases are the remote effects of syphilis in ancestors; also physicians generally concede that drinkers are more subject to filth diseases like cholera than total abstainers. Really, it looks as if scientists would be wise to take their attention for a while from microbes, bacilli, bacteria, mosquitoes, etc., and attack alcohol and lust, our worst health foes.—Pacific Ensign.
