The Peril of Orderly Mobs

On October 2, J. E. Brady, of Helena, Montana, was lynched by what the press styled “an orderly ‘mob,” in the public square at that place. The crime charged by the mob was criminal assault. The peril which such an affair as this makes manifest is in the complacency with which the public are coming to look upon it. There never was an “orderly” execution by a mob; but more and more frequently do we see reports of such occurrences in which the taking of life is done by what men are now coming to style “orderly mobs.” It is an indication of a retrogression which it is impossible to hide.
