A WONDERFULLY HELPFUL BOOK.

We wish, in this column, from time to time, to tell our readers of books which will greatly help them to an understanding of the Bible, strengthen them in Christian experience, and aid in the formation of a true, noble character.
One such book, pre-eminently, is before us. It is entitled, “Patriarchs and Prophets; or the Great ‘Conflict of Good and Evil as Illustrated in the Lives ‘of Holy Men of Old.” It covers that part of the Bible so little known generally, yet so rich in its wondrous lessons of God’s providences,—the Old Testament Scriptures, from the beginning to the last years of David. The first chapter is one of the best ever written on “Why Was Sin Permitted?” It alone is worth the price of the book.
The Creation, the Temptation and Fall, God’s wondrous love in the plan of salvation, the meaning of sacrifice, the marvelous teachings of God’s providence in the interesting history covered, are all set before the reader with a clearness, a simplicity and beauty which are admirable, helpful, soul-inspiring.
The book continually surprises one in the new revelations of Bible truth. The Bible-lover knows as soon as he reads the statement that it is true, and then he wonders why he did not see it before. There is not a revelation in life, not a duty toward God or man, but there is instruction upon it in this book. It has converting power for those who do not know the Lord; it has enlightenment for the ignorant; it has inspiration and power for the Christian. It ought to have a continually increasing circulation. Its author, a woman of deep Christian experience and divine enlightenment, is Mrs. E. G. White. It contains 766 large octavo pages, is well illustrated, and its prices are as follows:—
English cloth, design in jet and gold, marbled edges $2.25
Fine English cloth, design in jet and gold, gold edges 2.75
Library style, full sheep, combed marbled edges 3.00
Half morocco, gilt edges 3.50
Full Turkey morocco, gold side and back, gold edges, extra finish 4.50
It is also published in Danish, Swedish, German, Dutch, and Spanish, at the same prices, with the exception of the last two styles of binding. A cheaper edition, with four illustrations, may be had for $1.75.
