The Evils of City Life

The Lord knew the end from the beginning in more ways than one. The confusion of tongues at Babel was not only to defeat the tower project, but to discourage city building. He wanted men to cultivate the land, and get their subsistence from it, rather than by congregating in crowds to forage off one another. He could easily foresee the evils, moral and physical, of city life, and that the tendency would be toward that condition. The wisdom of His purpose is made plain, when we think of the erection of a tenement house on one block in New York City to accommodate 186 families.
