Fears of Another Boxer Uprising in China

The uncertainty of the conditions in China as regards the maintenance of peace was shown in the cablegram which the Italian charge d'affaires at Peking sent to his wife, warning her not to come to China at the present time. The United States general appraiser of customs and tariff commissioner, who sailed recently for China, has left his wife and family behind, tho he had intended taking them with him. Fears of another Boxer uprising are the cause of this apprehension on the part of foreign officials in China. A correspondent of the London Times, writing from Peking, asserts that immense quantities of arms and ammunition are being manufactured in China, and that large supplies of the implements of war are being imported by way of the Yang-tse Kiang. The British troops at Peking, which have been there during the past year, are now being replaced by fresh troops, and Chinese officials are much incensed over the matter.
