CHRISTIANITY AND DRUNKENNESS.
England is often called the most Christian country on the earth, and we presume that there are as many Christians proportionately there as anywhere else. But England is not Christian, nor are a majority of the people, measured by the amount spent not only for a wholly needless luxury, but that which is a curse, and only a curse. For instance, according to the London Times, the total liquor-consumption bill for the year 1900 amounted to $780,324,832; or $19.07 for each person. For an average family of five persons the expense would be $95.35. In England the cost for each person is placed at $20.17; in Scotland, at $16.08; in Ireland, at $14.06. The liquor bill is more than the cost of all the clothing, more than the rents of all the houses and farms of the country, more than seven times as much as for the collections for charity in all the churches, and more than the cost of the South African war. Who would not believe in annihilating the entire business from our world?
