Powder Explosion at Mare Island

On June 5, 300 tons of smokeless powder exploded at the government storehouse on Mare Island, San Francisco Bay. Fortunately the explosion occurred at an hour when there was no one in the vicinity, and no lives were lost. The powder alone was worth $500,000.
