The Cruelty of the Wealth Pursuit

Doubtless there are many of the rich men of commerce who in business parlance are honest. They would not stoop to do a mean, petty act. But many are controlled by a system, and practise methods, that are unjust and cruel. A goal must be reached, an object attained, and the project of wealth sweeps forward, absorbing, sweeping away, or crushing all that is in its path. Men are lost sight of in the struggle, only as they hinder or help; and then they are counted not as men, but as things. The principals do not see this; the work is done generally by agents who desire to stand well in the eyes of their employers. But in God’s court men will be held responsible for the acts of their heartless agents when it was in their power to effect a change.
