Not in Italy Alone

Not in Italy alone is it true. A prominent religious paper of the East says: “A tidal wave of crime seems to be sweeping over Italy at the present time. The total number of persons arrested last year was nearly twice as large as in the year before, the numbers being, respectively, 530,000 and 280,000. The principal increase is in murders and assassinations, and the police seem unable to check them.” Why does not the Catholic Church, so almost universal in that country, and which Dr. Conaty of Washington, D. C., tells us is “the great bulwark against anarchy,” stop this crime, check this tidal wave? Italy is a good place to begin. Surely the effects of her teaching during all these centuries should be manifest in Italy.
