THE FAMINE IN INDIA STILL.
By T.
The America-India Famine Relief Committee has just sent out a circular in regard to the conditions in the famine district of India, and the fact is stated that in many sections the famine will continue until the rainy season in June. In some sections of the famine district the rains of last year were late; but they began well, and hundreds of thousands of those who were being cared for by the government and the various charities went home to put in crops. But the late rains failed, so that they have only about one-fourth crop. Some of the neighboring regions will have good crops, and that will help to make food cheaper where the famine is still on. But it will be impossible for many of these unfortunates to get any money with which to buy, and so our help will still be needed. Any of those who have means that they would like to have used in that way, may still send it to this office, and we will see that it is promptly forwarded to the proper persons in India, so that it may be distributed judiciously among the sufferers. The relief committee desires to have special attention called to the fact that there are 25,000 famine children collected in 100 homes, who have no one to care for them except those who, out of love and pity, have given them shelter, food, and care. It will cost a large sum to care for these alone, and certainly there is no more commendable work. This is the chance for Christianity to do its real work. Every one who has taken upon himself the name of Christ should feel this responsibility. T.
