THY CROSS.

TAKE up thy cross, go forth and live. What is thy cross? What must thou give 'Tis not of wood, heavy with woe, That was thy Saviour's cross below; 'Tis not of jewels dark or fair, That on the breast a priest might wear, 'Tis not a temple's trimming high, That's viewed by every passer-by: It may be only felt, yet known To be Christ's will crossing thine own, Thy will must then be crucified, Or else for thee Christ has not died.
Take up thy cross, go forth, uplift; Thy cross His will, thy heart thy gift. 'Tis thus our poor crossed wills define The freedom of a will divine.
