Christianity and True Modesty

ALTHO Tully described modesty as the “custos virtutum omnium”—the guardian of the whole series of virtues—almost all the heroes of ancient Greek and Roman literature and history speak of themselves and their deeds in vainglorious terms. It is Christianity, with its great revelation of God and its humbling declaration regarding the sinful estate of man, that produces in the human mind a sobering estimate of itself and a genuine modesty and docility.—M.
