War Intensifies in South Africa
AFFAIRS in South Africa grow more serious with each new day. Additional companies of Boers have invaded Cape Colony, and are reported to be gaining strength as they go. The British generals continue to call for more mounted troops to meet or capture these bands which are advancing further into British territory. At Zandfontein General Babington's Imperial Light Horse suffered severely, having been drawn into ambush by the Boers. A simultaneous attack was made by the Boers upon four different British posts on January 7. At one of these posts, Belfast, the British lost 29 killed, 53 wounded, and 72 missing. The results of the other attacks are not given. Three members of the peace commission were made prisoners by General De Wett, and all were severely flogged. One, a British subject, was flogged and shot.
