Duke of Norfolk’s Address to the Pope

THE public press of both England and Italy is denouncing the recent utterances of the Duke of Norfolk in his address to the pope. The duke, who is earl marshal of London, in the address referred to expressed the hope that the pope would yet see the restoration of his temporal power. This would, of course, mean the overthrow of the present Italian Government and the rule of the papal power in the capital of Italy. The address also condemned the toleration of the Italian Protestants by the Italian Government. Italy regards the speech of the duke as an insult, and England deprecates the incident.
